I am Choquequirao

¡I am Choquequirao, the sacred brother of Machu Picchu, guardian of the Andes and silent witness of a powerful and mystical civilization. Throughout the centuries, I have stood the test of time, hidden among mountains and clouds, patiently waiting for those brave ones who dare to discover me. Although I am deep in the Andes, far from the busiest tourist routes, those who find me know that their effort has been worthwhile.!

The Way to Me:

Getting to me is not easy, but the reward is great. My home is located deep in the Vilcabamba mountain range, 3,050 meters above sea level, surrounded by a landscape as majestic as it is challenging. To reach me, you must be willing to embark on a journey that will test your body and spirit, but I promise you that each step will be an approach to history and to a place where time seems to have stopped.

Your trip starts in the picturesque village of Cachora, in the Apurimac region. From there, the trail will take you through a scenic route that winds between mountains, giving you spectacular views of the Apurimac Canyon. The river that bears my name, with flowing waters and emerald, will accompany you for a good part of the way, its murmur echoing like an ancient song of the earth

On your journey, the landscapes that surround you will take your breath away. The flora you will find is a sample of the biodiversity that makes Peru so special, but what really captivates many of my visitors is the richness of my birdlife. Peru has been named as the country with the greatest bird diversity in the world, and the road to me is a paradise for bird watching lovers. Here, in these mountains, numerous species inhabit, many of which have not even been censored.

As you go, look up and look for the majestic flight of the Andean condor, the emblematic bird of the Andes, which hopefully, you will be able to see gliding over the valleys. Listen to the melodious songs of the hummingbirds that flutter from flower to flower, and observe the bright colors of the parrots and macaws that adorn the skies. It is not uncommon to find rare and endemic species in this very diverse ecosystem, some of which can only be seen here. Every step on your way is an opportunity to discover a new plumage, a new song, and to connect with nature in a way that is rarely possible

But not only nature will surprise you; on your way, you will cross paths with the inhabitants of the local communities, who will receive you with a warmth that knows no borders. Their kindness and hospitality are as imposing as the mountains that surround them. The men and women of these lands, direct descendants of the Incas, will tell you their stories, sharing with you the richness of their culture and traditions. It is not uncommon to be offered a coca tea to combat altitude sickness, or to be invited to try a typical dish prepared with local products

The ascent to me is demanding, but as you climb, you will feel how the connection with nature becomes deeper. The fatigue will be rewarded with every new panoramic view, every sunrise over the snowy peaks, and every encounter with the fauna that inhabits these lands. When you finally get to me, the tiredness will disappear when you see my terraces and temples that emerge from the fog like a dream come true. Only those who persevere can understand my true essence.

And when you have explored every corner of my territory, when you have absorbed the energy that surrounds me, the return will be a reflection on the lived experience. You will return by the same path, but this time taking with you a part of me, which will stay in your memory forever. The beauty of the landscapes, the richness of the flora and fauna, and the kindness of the people you met will make your trip to Choquequirao unforgettable

Questions from the Heart of Choquequirao:

“I, Choquequirao, ask you: who were those who built me with such dedication and precision?   What dreams did they have, where did they come from?   The men and women who built my walls, who carved every stone and designed my terraces, what prompted them to create me in this secluded corner of the world?

Where did they come from, and how did they find this sacred place, hidden among the mountains?   Through the centuries, I have kept its secrets, but every visitor who comes to me becomes a part of my history, searching for answers in my ancient ways and contemplating the legacy left by those who gave me life.”
